I was wondering if anybody here knew how much a stock certificate for 500 shares of british telcom bought in 1986 are worth today?

BT shares are worth 174p each.
I would think the 500 shares bought in 1986 are still 500 shares. To check the validity of the holding and the number of shares you had better check with the BT Registrars who are Equniti:
